Indian aid arrives to remove Turkish jet from Kathmandu airport

Kathmandu: An Indian Air Force C-130J Super Hercules transport plane carrying an aircraft removal kit landed in Kathmandu`s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) on Thursday to help remove a Turkish Airlines Airbus A-330 that skidded off the runway on Wednesday.

Nepal request to India to send the special aircraft to remove the Turkish plane from the runway to pave the way for resumption of international flights in and out of Kathmandu.

Nepal does not have a crane and airline removal kit of the size required for the task, said Ratindra Lal Suman, general manager of the Nepal Civil Aviation Authority.

"Such a heavy crane and airline removal kit is available in India and Thailand, so we made the request to India," he said.

The special Indian aircraft will remove the Turkish airline from the runway to clear the way for resuming international flights that have been stalled since Wednesday morning.

Turkish Airlines on Wednesday urged the Indian Air Force to send in its aircraft to remove the crashed jet.

According to an official, Teknath Sitoula, the rescue team has started repairing the tyres of the Turkish jet to ease the removal process, which is likely to take five hours. The total weight of the Turkish plane is 250,000 kg.

As a result of the accident, TIA has been shut down on Thursday and all international flights have been cancelled till 5 p.m.

The passenger jet had skidded off the runway and veered onto the grassy shoulder while landing at the TIA on Wednesday morning. The flight from Istanbul was carrying 224 people when it ploughed into the grassland on the left side of the runway at Kathmandu`s fog-covered airport at 7.45 a.m.

May be it was a paid service. Are u sure India is doing it for free? So think before coming to any conclusion. It is not economically sound for Nepal to have such capacity which is very rarely used. It is economically wise to pay someother for such rare incident. I don't see anything special about it.

It clearly says "Indian Aid" so I doubt it was a paid service.

Aeroplane belongs to Turkish company, not Nepal I company so it is the responsibility of Turkish company to remove its aeroplane, not Nepal's responsibility so money will be paid by Turkish company not by Nepal. And in such accident it is the insurance company who pays the cost. This is as simple as that.

Yes, Indian media reported as India is doing a great favour to Nepal. This is how nationalist Indian media is. It is not Nepal who requested it was Turkey

@bichitra...don't throw politics at least on this case. We don't like India over so many things but still we have to appreciate what India did at least on this case. It seems like an aid but even if it's a paid service, it's still considered a help considering how fast the Indian Air Force assembled their support team and equipment and landed in Kathmandu on such a short notice. Every hour of our airport closure counts towards thousands of dollars of lost income for the airport. India could have said they will be in Kathmandu on Saturday at the earliest and all we could do is wait and wait and embarass ourselves in front of international community.

Lol, politics is the last thing I will do in such incident. Who is doing politics here? media who is portraying paid service as aid or me who is trying to make things clear? Twisting the fact is yellow journalism. Because of Turkish aeroplane TIAs service is disrupted. Airport authority and other airlines who are losing money can ask Turkish company for compensation. That is why Turkey requested IndiA because it takes long time for Turkey to bring all equipment s in Kim.

So, as a Nepali we have to accept whatever Indian media says ? What type of mentality is this ?

'Aid' can be 'totally free' or 'paid help'. If you talk about popular 'aid dependency' in Nepal's context, Aid is composed of Grants and Loans. And Loan is way bigger than Grant, especially for the last 20 years. Not a big deal. Many media people are not educated or they act in a way to fulfill their false imagination of something.

Not a big deal in the Turkish plane towing issue either. If India did not have or was not ready to provide assistance, they would have asked Thailand. One more hour distance?, and few thousand more charges? That would still be ok. I think there must be something in ICAO which says "if the public air transportation in neighboring country is halted due to these kinds of obstruction, the neighboring country will provide assistance (of course it can not be mandatory" [though i am not sure about it, just a guess].

Mandatory to help neighboring country? You must be kidding right? The same India that did economic blockade against Nepal in late 80's.

Now that we have politicians licking India's ass every opportunity they get so India gets to impose their decisions in internal Nepali politics they don't mind sending help.

Yes, neighbouring country should help, but no where it says help must be free.

In this case Nepal requested on behalf of Turkish airlines because without nepal"s permission Indian airforce plane can not fly inside Nepal and can not land in Tia. Nepal must give permission to land air force plane and its cargo.

India being a cleverly country instead of asking permission persuaded Nepal to request. Nepal did and now some Indian media using this to spread greatness ( or whatever) of IndiA.

It is the Turkish airlines responsibility to remove its plane from runway

@bichitra....u r just spitting out ur assumptions as facts, aren't u??? Facts are proven statements. Let me spit out my opinion (not facts) too.

Just because u think it's a paid service does not make it a fact since nobody has said a word about paid service, unless u have some inside info.

TIA service is disrupted not because of Turkish airlines but because of inclement weather and TIA's lack of instrument guided landing system.

Turkish airlines is not liable for any financial losses for the airport or other airlines because of the accident. It's the airport's responsibility to remove any debris out of runway, not the airlines responsibility.

It's Nepal government/TIA officials who requested Indian govt to provide the support (check nepalese newspapers or interviews of TIA officials). Turkish airlines also asked for it along with Nepal govt. The more days that plane stays there, the more losses and more embarassment Nepal gets. Nepal is more interested than Turkish airlines to move that plane out of the runway.

Ny2,

Your assumption that I am assuming is wrong. The responsibility of state of occurrence (Nepal), state of operation and registry ( Turkey, I guess) is mentioned in ICAO rules. You just have to find out instead of pulling trigor in dark.

Please educate youerself before commenting on serious matters. It is not like commenting on" saili ra maili poila gayechhan" Nepal's responsibility is mainly to keep all the evidence intact to help investigation later on. Without Nepal's permission neither India nor Turkey will be able to remove aeroplane because removal of damaged aircraft may result in loss of evidence.

Regarding the compensation ppl and airlines may ask Tia for compensation and Tia May ask Turkish air for compensation. For its loss unless it is proven that incident was due to tia fault.
So stop assuming it's time for serious work.

I don't think even big commercial fleet hold aircraft recovery equipment, but military fleet mostly do. Doesn't it makes sense to get those equipment from India or China during these type of situation?

ThAt is my point phatte, this is common practice except for few big countries. Those who provide service get paid. But in Nepal instead of taking it normal we try to divide Nepal I into pro or anti Indian.

In this case Turkey ask India India needed Nepals permission, which is must. India suffering from big brother syndrome ask Nepal to request, Nepal being practical requested. That's all nothing more nothing less

I am more commenting on ur comments, so i guess i dont have to be educated myself on commenting on someon's foolish comments. The matter is serious and my comments are not on how thise thing shud be handled, thise are being handled correctly, my comments are on how u r putting ur BS opinions as facts.

The only people that can claim for compensation are the passengers injured if any. Do you really think all other people who got stuck in the airport, who have to stay in the hotel, who may have lost income coz they cudn't travel till any international flight resumes can ask TIA or turkish airlines for compensation?? If u think so, u have not a bit of knowledge in this industry.....u might wanna educate urself first before commenting on my comments.

When did i say india or turkey can remove the plane without Nepal's permission for you to direct ur while one paragraph lecture to me about that?? U have no idea wat u r talking about. U wanna comment on my comments, do so on my comments, dont come up with ur own assumptions on things that i did not say...

So, u r afraid of truth ha, u already surrendered man, very easily, if the question of compensation is so easy there is no need of lawyers. Lol, looks like you failed to find the ICAO rules and start blabbering. You don't want to get out of your cubicle and dream. Keep on, what else?
