Maoists hold massive Nepal rally

At least 200,000 people have taken part in a Maoist rally in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu - the first there by the rebels for three years.
Streets were hung with banners bearing communist slogans and posters of the Maoist leader, Prachanda.

King Gyanendra ended 14 months of absolute rule in April after weeks of pro-democracy protests.

The new multi-party government has been holding talks with the Maoists aimed at ending the 10-year insurgency.

The Maoists are demanding the dissolution of the government and elections to a new constituent assembly.

The BBC's Charles Haviland in Kathmandu says Friday's rally was huge, with people crushed against fences and climbing walls for a better view.

This could be the beginning of city cleansing in Nepal just like what happened in Cambodia by Polpot and his Khmer Rouge.
Dark days are ahead for Nepal. Once again the nepali politicians ineptness to negotiate with Maoists and bring the criminals to justice is going to cost many lives. We have shot ourselves again on our feet.

"Hang Gyanendra" Maoists shout at Nepal rally
Source: Reuters

By Gopal Sharma

KATHMANDU, June 2 (Reuters) - Their fists raised in the air and clutching red flags, some 200,000 Nepalis gathered in the capital on Friday for the first Maoist rally in three years to build pressure for a constituent assembly to decide the country's future.

Tens of thousands of people filled into a public ground in Kathmandu, many berating King Gyanendra just 500 metres (yards) from the royal palace.

"We will burn the crown and we will run the country," they shouted. Chants of "Gyanendra thief, leave the country" and "Hang Gyanendra" were also heard.

This must be a joke. Running a country? With what? No brain but with guns and knives.

Maoists rebels rally in Nepal’s capital
By Binod Bhattarai inKathmandu
Published: June 2 2006 16:58 | Last updated: June 2 2006 16:58

Nepal’s Maoists rebels staged a mass rally in the heart of the capital on Friday, their first in three years.

Crowds of 200,000 gathered just 500 metres from the Royal Palace, chanting slogans denouncing the monarchy and demanding “unconditional” elections for an assembly that would write a new constitution.

Banners, hammer and sickle communist flags, and teenage volunteer ushers in identical T-shirts coloured the city centre red.

“We are here with a proposal for peace, the people’s army will not be an obstacle to the peace process,” said Pravakar, deputy commander of the Maoist People’s Liberation Army. “We will achieve our goals through peaceful means.”

Armed soldiers guarded the palace and patrolled the city in armoured vehicles. Riot police stood by.

Only if someone could have dropped a bomb right in the middle. It would have broken the spin of the Maoists.

The Mass. Maoists claimed to bring 5 hundred thousand people in Tundikhel today. But many independent estimates put the number at around 2 hundred thousands.

Dear all! This is wrong! we don't need Maoist in Nepal!
If we could not act according to time, time does not wait for us "Recently, F PM, S Thapa had mentioned in Washington DC, on May 29, 2006 referring Gyanendra's seizing power and did nothing for Nepal. If then Nepalese Government and political parties
had thought that way, we would not have today's mass meeting of Maoist rebel in Katmandu, I realy don't think Girija is visionary Leader and his corrupted Cabinets members such as KHUME, GOVINDE, CHIRINJIBE, GUPTE, BIJaYa Gachhedaru, alcoholic Shere, and his Shakune daughter Sujajte and Bhaujuy Nonee. Those Cabinet members did not have time to think about country, they were very busy .........we know what. I assumed the Democracy and socialism have been vanished from Nepal, which Bir Bisheshwor Prasad, Krishna P Bhattarai, Surya Prasad, and Subarna Shumsher had thought and showed to Nepalese people in 1950. I truly felt today democracy of Nepal has been defeated by Maoist. Maoists are there because Garcia had power for 14 years now Garcia is dying bed and Maoist are harvesting in their investment from the same guys, who brought country in this situation.
