sidster said "I Dont watch Hindi movie because they offend me. Bollywood movie is offensive to anyone who has reasonable intelligence as the movie is made for uneducated Rikshaw Pullers only"
Sidster-ji, you haven't answered my question clearly on Why then the Hindi movies play on every city of the World like London, New York, Washington, D.C, Germany, and African Continent?
As you have said "movie is made for uneducated Rikshaw Pullers" Is Bollywood trying to reach "Rikshaw Pullers" in those cities?
Or you're trying to say any person who goes to see Hindi Movies spending dollars/pounds and Euro in those cities like New York, Rome, Washington DC have knowledge/intelligent to that level of an "uneducated Rikshaw Pullers".
We all Nepalese as well go to see Hindi movies. I go to see Hindi movies. Am I "Rikshaw Pullers" living in US?
You really need to change your thinking. Sometimes what you think is NOT what it is.

Sidster, the rikshaw puller theory could work in the 80s or 90s but not now. Maybe you need to get a little updated with the current world.
Some of them maybe poorly done masala flicks but the majority cannot be classified as rikshaw puller flicks anymore.
Nepali movies and comedy are still in the Rikshaw Puller stage. Rajesh Hamal's acting and Haribansha's comedy cater to those audience.

Sidster,
I agree with what you are saying and also understand what you are saying. Many will not understand what you are saying. The addiction to trashy art is crazy among our people. It is not wrong to watch bollowood movies for cheap humor or for a time pass every now and then but to replace our own traditions with some trashy bollywood music is epitomy of ignorance. I too hate it when i go to Nepali Programs and SOBs are dancing on some "Choli ke piche kya hai " songs on the stage representing nepali cultural program. Every thing has a time and a place. I dont mind dancing to some trashy bollywood song in a bar or a club but everything should have its place. Defending own culture is not a hatred towards another culture.
Bollywood movie is like a Indian Street food. It is not healthy and it can possibly give you nausea and diarrhea but being said that i think it is still okay to have a craving for the "street food" every now and then. But knowing that it is just a street food and not a regular meal is important and understanding that it is a big NO NO for Wedding, Dashain, and Tihar celebrations are even more important.
One of my friend's argument was...yes bollywood is trashy but now even that trash has identified as some kind of an "art" an art of making trashy movies. LOL he could be right on that one.
Bollywood has no shame, they steal dialouges, scenes, sets from other industry. Most Rikshaw pullers do not know other industries to compare where stealing happened. Its all original to them.
I liked how you put it up there. Its a "chatpate" on the street, its spicy and is good to eat sometimes but you risk Diarreha and malnutrition if you tried it too often.
But there are some non main street bollywood production that produce high quality movies but our people do not even know about those movies. When they talk bollywood they are talking Salman Khan and other silly Khan's trashy movies.

Sexy in Sari,
Just because you and some other like McDonalds $1 menu, it does not mean that there are no better sandwiches out there. It only means you are addicted to $1 Menu sandwich and you prefer that even in a gourmet dinner.
Bollywood movies are $1 menu food in the world of art.

SAP Dude, what is your point exactly? So some people love the $1 burger and some people don't. It is universal truth that people have different preferences. So what is your point? Are you saying people stop eating the $1 burger coz you said so?

nope the point is that when you eat $1 menu sandwich just know what you are eating and don't bolster that you ate a big sandwich and dont assume that it was the greatest sandwich in the world. $1 menu sandwiches are made from chicken like materials...not exactly chicken but it looks, feels, and tastes like chicken. You can eat that sandwich when you are hungry, or in hurry, or just broke but dont celebrate Dashain, Tihar, and other Nepali Cultural program with that $1 sandwich.

Sap Dude, I still do not see your point. No one bragged about eating a big angus burger at the first place .It is about preferences and choices, I am not saying Bollywood movies are better than a Coen brother classic, I am just saying I watch it sometimes to escape. Also, did you just say that Sambhujit Bastola's songs are a well aged t-bone steak? I understand that we need to respect our culture, which we honestly do, but that shouldn't dictate the choices we make. If we go down that line, I wonder if you are wearing daura suruwal as you are typing this.

I see many posters dictating that " everyone should like bollywood and should dance to their trashy songs in our auspicious day" We are all defending our own choices by posting here and the choice to call it a trash and not welcome it in our traditional programs in order to defend our own traditions and culture is the CHOICE i stand by.

I just read through the thread and failed to come up with that statement you made.
"everyone should like bollywood and should dance to their trashy songs in our auspicious day" Mind clarifying please? I am certain most people here play both Hindi music and Nepali music in the weddings and even when they play Hindi music only, I doubt there are individuals who do that because they think Nepali music is trashy. At least I do not, I just think some hindi numbers are more catchy than Nepali numbers, that is the only difference. Whatever happened to brotherhood of mankind and espousing magnanimity? You and sidster both went as far as calling names. C'mon now, do we always have to prove our point without flaring our tempers?

I dont know how simply i can put it for you. There should be no room for " munni badnaam huwi" and "gaand me lagi aag" kind of songs and music on a "Nepali Cultural Show", Dashian Party, and Tihar party....that has nothing to do with Nepali culture. There are some good Remix nepali dance numbers now. Know the time and place for right songs...thats all im saying. There is a place for those catchy songs...Bars and Clubs are okay for those songs...i have danced on those songs in a bar too...there is a place for trash and i have enjoyed trash at the right venues. I am only against playing those numbers in every traditional occasion as if we do not have a tradition of our own. Now not saying that Nepali songs are better than Hindi songs but we should own up to our own trash than someone else's trash. Every time these arguments show up, the burden is always on the people to prove they are not India haters. Some thinks its an art and others think its trash. Just because you hate bollywood movies does not make one India hater. There are lots of Indians who find Indian movies silly and do not waste their time on it. Its a choice, the choice should be respected the same way the Bollywood followers want their choice respected.

Haha clearly sap dude is making up his own arguments and arguing with himself. Lol whata a riot! Do i sense a dim glimmer of taliban mentality here? Would it be a major tire burning issue if someone said they did not likr the new national anthem? Interestingly the blind haters of anything indian cant stop conplaining about how india copies from the west. How movies are stolen from hollywood and even music is stolen from english music. However they dont have anything bad to say about western influence! Behoove, good point about daura suruwal and while we are on the topic, anyone see the similarity between the daura suruwal and the pathaan suruwaal? Heck the suruwal is very similar to the indian women's kurta suruwal! Lets not get into nepali womens clothing. Makes you wonder where the brave nepali forefathers copied their clothes from.

Totally agreed on this SAP Dude. My only issue was the name calling. I might still want to insist that the choices we make shouldn't be influcenced by the fact as in which side of the border we are, but I'd like to put that argument to bed now. Once again, I didn't mean to say just because one loathes hindi music or movies makes him an India hater the very next second, but if terms like mofo and sob are used to get one's point across, it just sounds a little like it. Anyways, we had a good run in defending our points. Peace

Onion, Tire burning is not a good choice. A good choice is just to say " what a fking loser, look at him enjoying the trash" either to yourself or your friend and move on to your own lives. That is all i get out of it. It gives me a good chuckle when i see others enjoying trash. Definitely not worth burning tires.

My family members are fully aware that i do not participate on trash at the wrong venue. When i see trashy songs played in the cultural nights i let the organizer know that is it not appreciated. "choli ke piche kya hai" is not our culture. However....it might be alright at some Desi club. Mind you...even Indians do not present those tacky songs in their cultural programs...they go with their classical dance (bharat natyam and kathhak) in their cultural programs. Its just the slow minded Nepalese who do not know the difference between culture and Masala and shake their tails on these beats. Addiction to trash has eliminated what is right and what is wrong among us.

So what's the issue over here? Playing any bollywood songs or trashy songs like Munni Badnaam in Nepali Cultural events?

I feel, reading and posting in similar post in the past few days, people who watch all these hindi movies and dance to hindi songs trying really hard to to justify their choice. I do feel their fear of being labeled pro-Indian. Anytime someone posts something remotely close to questioning the role of these art/music, they get really defensive because in their mind, it is a direct assault to their nationality. Its a dichotomy, on their mind that they simply cannot resolve. This does not encompass all, some have made good argument with other philosophical reasons but others, not so much... p.s. Mr. Onion, please educate this rickshaw puller (as you have implied) where is the comedic relief you talk about in your original sentence. For this simple minded, it merely seemed like your ideological leaning jotted down in a badly put argument (as I might point out, rest of you post has justifies). As your admirer of your other comedic snippets, I am at a total loss for reason on this one.

I understand where you guys are coming from but I find your constricted understanding of reality very unappealing to say the least. Are you not aware that in southern part of Nepal, people grow up all their lives communicating in Hindi? According to your logic, they should be denied from talking in Hindi during official Nepali events and there should not be any representation of their music. The world is becoming a smaller place due to the free flow of information but people still choose to discriminate their own people due to their differences. When you talk of "WE" in general who are you talking about? Who are we?

Not against Indians as there are some good quality Indians that I have interacted with..but I don't normally watch hindi movies..because most of the hindi movies sucked when I watched. Used to watch big boss and liked it when Pooja Mishra was telling "spare the fuck me"...not sure what this topic is about as I didn't read other comments and jumped with my own comments... If I could..I would BAN hindi serials. Hindi serials inspires you to play politics in your family life. I hate Hindi serials and dislike people who watch them.
