Sensei Ambar Bahadur Rai is from Okhaldhunga. During his school days, one of the Indian Army (Boxer) happened to introduce him to martial arts and he was eager to learn the art from then. He came to Singapore in 1989. Karate instructor Sensei Hom Nath Gurung who is 4th Dan Black belt in Kyukoshin Karate introduced him to the martial art. Kyokushin Karate, a full contact Karate is well known for its tough training. He faced lots of full contact sparring in his early days when he was just white belt. But this is what makes all Kyokushin fighters strong, both mentally and physically. During his free time, sensei Rai started to train in Kyokushin Karate. He joined Kyukushin Karate in Gurkha Contingent Dojo in the year 1990.

He achieved his 1st Dan Black Belt in 1993. Currently he is 2nd incharge of the Gurkha Contingent Dojo.
He is also the committee members of Singapore Oyama Karate-do Kyokushinkai-kan.

Sensei Ambar Bahadur Rai Participated Tournaments are:

   1. Singapore international Open Karate national selection tournament 1992.
   2. Fighter in International Open Karate tournament at Singapore Indoor stadium 23-24 Oct 1992.
   3. Singapore open Karate tournament 1995.
   4. Oyama Karate Full-contact knock-down tournament 2000.

He has the following experiences for officiating:

   1. Official at 9th World Open Karate Tournament Tokyo, Japan 16-18 Nov 2007
   2. World Kyokushin Karate seminar at Mount Mitsumine, Japan 19-21 Nov 2007
   3. Kyokushin Karate seminar and 3rd Dan upgrading test in Shanghai, China 5-10 Jun 2008
   4. Organizing committee in the 11th Asia Full Contact Karate Championship Singapore 25th Oct 2008

Here's some information about our Gurkha brothers in Singapore.

This is never seen footage! Different kind from British Gurkha.
Gurkha really make Nepal proud. They put Nepal on the world map!

Mr JPEG,

The information/pictures/videos you have posted are very good indeed. Who would not feel proud of another Nepali's achievements? But unfortunately you diluted the whole thing by the title itself. The title "Nepali caught wacking Kale" does not do justice to those fighters. The racial undertone in the title gives a wrong impression as if we Nepalese have jaundiced eyes when looking at people of African origin. This is really unfortunate.

If the title would have been "Singaporean Nepalis shine in Karate" or "Nepalis in Singapore making the whole diaspora proud" or something of the sort; it would have been wonderful.

And for crying out loud I did not see the so called "Kale"(James I believe is his name) being "wacked" as you claimed at anytime of the game. I wonder how you got that impression.

Hope to see your prejudice-free future postings in the future. By the way, I truly like your "True beauties" posting. They really show our rich cultural diversity.

Good Luck!

More Nepalese fighters doing good.

Shateesh and Pavitra (Sabina ) Rai, who won the Gold Medal and Bronze medal respectively in Ontario Provincial Senior 1st team selection games at Humber college on September 24, last year.

Shateesh won Gold medal in middle weight category and Pavitra (Sabina) Rai won the bronze medal in female bantam weight category. Sabina had a bout with Shannon Condie - Canadian National Champion, Pan American Champion and world Bronze medalist - in semi final match. Sabina just started to compete in elite level in 2008.

Shateesh Rai was declared the winner in final match against Kwon Suhan from Royal Military College (RMC) and received Gold Medal though he had long time off from the competition due to his knee surgery in 2006. In addition he had previously won the Gold medal in Canadian National Junior Taekwondo Championship in Edmonton and Bronze Medal in Pan American Taekwondo Championship in Aruba, 2005. Along with Taekwondo award he was also awarded the Citizen Award 2006 from Brampton Mayor Susan Fennell.

Shateesh and Sabina learned Taekwondo at the YMCA Mississauga Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo Club from Master Rajkumar Rai, father of Shateesh and Sabina and former Nepal and Hong Kong National Champion himself.

We should wish them the best for their future achievement.

Nepal future champions.

A small contingent of Gurkha's travelled to compete in the National Chungdo Kwan Championship held on the 21st March 2009.

Although few in number there indomitable spirit shone through to take them to overall 3rd Place. In total they won 14 Gold, 8 Silver and 5 Bronze.

For those of you don't know, Master Rastra Rai 4th Degree Black Belt affiliated Sagarmatha TKD and the Gurkha regiment of soldiers to Imperial back in 2003. They practice both ITF and WTF Taekwon-Do and have gone from strength to strength over the past few years. We are very proud of there achievement and look forward to continuing our Taekwon-Do future.

Watch out for the new Imperial / Sagarmatha schools in Nepal.
