i have heard that all students are required to find a job within the 90 days of their OPT to maintain their F1 status. How much truth is on this ? and is it for all students or only for those who go for the STEM OPT. I have checked the USCIS website too but got no luck.
Any expert ????
thanx in advance

Yes that is true. Our University called us and said that the
rule started from 8th of April and it is for all. They also said
that if we have job then its ok and send all the detail of our employer if not
then we have to find job within in 3 months that is from April 8th
to June 8th otherwise we will be out of status. And my friend this
OPT rule is for all not only for STEM OPT since mine is not STEM OPT too. Have a great day.

Here is the most recently updated information regarding OPT UNEMPLOYMENT..............
Unemployment Provisions
- NAFSA was told that SEVP is not planning to apply the unemployment provision to any student whose OPT was approved before April 8, 2008. NAFSA expects this to be clarified in the written Operating Instructions that SEVP plans to post no later than April 18, 2008.
- SEVP indicated that days of unemployment will be counted from either the start date requested (no later than 60 days after program end date) or the date the employment authorization is adjudicated, whichever is later.
- SEVP further indicated that ICE may consider tolling the days for those students whose EAD was approved but not received (e.g. lost in the mail). For example, if a student has to re-apply for a duplicate EAD because the first was lost in the mail, ICE may take into account the date the duplicate EAD was issued.
- Regarding unpaid employment, SEVP said:
- For regular post-completion OPT, the employment does NOT have to paid employment. Therefore, a student who is self-employed (including performance majors with regular “gigsâ€), interning or volunteering in a position directly related to the academic field would be considered “employed†for the purposes of OPT employment.
- For the 17-month STEM extension, employment must be traditional paid employment.

It seems that this is true. we have to find a job within 3 months of our OPT period. sajhamember, techguy and kalopani thanx for putting your line on this thread. Some of my friends got call from my university too and i m expecting that call too. lets see what would happen within this week ?
Going for a consultancy is one option or again enrolll in another collge. I didn't file for H1 this year cause i wanted to make some money during my OPT period..ofcourse at a gas station. Came to know that now they have lottery for H1.And now this f(cking 3 months rule.
Kalopani, u r right. These people thinks that we're having too much fun in this country. And to make it better they are getting this new rule......
Never thought that life will make a turn like this way. Wish i have choices here just like i used to have at back home.

Well, you have to get a job within 90 days, but what type of job. Does the rule mention that the students with certain degrees shoul get some some sorts of job ? Because this country also has certain degree of unemployment, how can they enforce us to get within 90 days ? If there is no provision of what type of job we need to find or get involved in, can't we just show them what we are involved in now ? This is what played in my mind. I do not have complete information, and my university hasn't called yet. Can someone make it clear ?
