I know we are all excited about partying at the convention Here are some suggestions for the out of town Nepali folks to do and enjoy outside of the convention in the bay area.Hope this is helpful:

-Oakland
isn’t the greatest of places, if you wanna go sightseeing definitely head to San Francisco across the Bay Bridge

-Visit the Golden Gate Bridge: The scene of the SF skyline from the golden gate bridge vista point is spectacular. You can also walk or bike on the bridge

-Visit the Piers and Fisherman’s Wharf: This is a very touristy place, a walk alongside the piers is pretty fulfilling. Pier 39 is the most famous where you can shop, eat and enjoy the festivities. Best time to visit is in the evening. Lots of activities going on.

-Take the Cruise to Golden Gate Bridge: There are a few options for cruises that take you below the Golden Gate Bridge.I highly recommend it. Price starts at $25. I think the $25 one does not stop at Alcatraz, just goes around it. You have to pay more if you want to stop at Alcatraz.

-China
Town
and Lombard Street: SF’s china town is pretty famous; also don’t forget the most crooked street in the world.

-Beaches: Half moon Bay is pretty good and fairly close. Santa Cruz might be a little further, go there if you have time.

-Restaurants:I don’t’ know much about Oakland but there are some great but extremely expensive places to eat in SF. If you are interested in Nepali Indian Pakistani Food then definitely head out to SF or to the south bay. Nepali places I recommend: Taste of the Himalayas, Metro Kathmandu. Heard good things about Little Nepal but never been. For Indian I would recommend Shalimar (SF or Fremont) or Bombay Gardens.

-Shopping: If you want to shop, and I know some girls do, probably head to Union Square. I am not an expert on this matter

I know there are tons of other things to do in the bay area, I just added a few off the top of my head, Please Carry on …

How is the public transport by the venue? Is it easy to get around? Or a car is required?

Excellent posting, Hawaldar.

Transportation

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART)
  • East Bay and North Bay are well connected through the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART).
  • Both SFO and OAK are conveniently located near BART stations (have to take a short shuttle ride from OAK); you should have no problems getting to your accommodations when you arrive.
  • Getting to San Francisco is just as easy. Hop on to the BART and you're there.
  • The only limitations of the BART are that it doesn't go very far south. Millbrae is the last stop and you'd have to take buses there on.
  • http://www.bart.gov (see route map below)

San Francisco Cable Cars

  • Excellent way to get around the city.
  • Runs on California, Powell, Hyde, Jackson, Washington, Mason, Columbus, and Taylor.
  • Head east on the California line and you'll hit Embarcadero, which is basically where the Piers are.
  • http://www.sfcablecar.com (see route map below)

CalTrain
  • The CalTrain connects SF to Silicon Valley.
  • You'll want to take this if you want to see Stanford or various company campuses, including but limited to Google, Cisco, HP, Apple, etc.
  • You might even catch something at the Shoreline Amphitheater if you're lucky.
  • http://www.caltrain.com (see route map below)

Valley Transportation Authority (VTA)
  • These are buses that service mostly Silicon Valley and East Bay.
  • They take up time but they'll get you where you want to go.
  • http://www.vta.org (Here's the map: http://www.vta.org/schedules/pdf/system_map.pdf)
Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun, all!
