Mio Mio Mio

Just like other GPS users, I am fully satisfied with Mio, I am using it since 3 years. Among all the electronic gadgets I have owned, I think, this one stays at the top of the list if I compare utility versus price paid.

I paid $175 for it in late 2006 when other units having similar features but of Garmin / TomTom logos used to cost over $350; pretty cheap deal at the time.

The built-in unit came with basic 48-state US maps. But there are a lot of maps available for free download. I now have collected maps of over 40 countries across the globe. Updated maps also available occasionally. Currently I am using maps updated in late 2008, which I believe is the latest release map.

The good point is, you can tweak the basic software and extend the power of the GPS unit. A basic navigating tool of mine is now extended to a much more advanced GPS device. It originally used to display pretty generic map and voice instruction saying just "turn left", "turn right". But now, it can read street names in several voices; can utilize hundreds of navigation screens as desired. You can also design the outlooks yourself, even display your picture on the welcome screen. If someone steals your GPS and finds your picture on it every time he turns on, he would be badly pissed off. Additionally, it can warn about speed limits, make you aware of the speed cameras, track routes, modify maps, add/edit point of interests etc. etc. You can even tweak the GPS satellite frequency for better and faster tuning. My GPS does not take more than 20 sec. to warm up. But sometime, it may take up to 2 minutes to detect signal if the disturbing signals are too strong.  In addition to that, I have even added movie player, game player, text file reader, notebook or memo writer, pdf file reader, photo viewer, mp3 player and many more applications. Any audio/video that plays with windows media player plays with the GPS unit in a couple of clicks.

To be honest, I have cross compared my unit with many other expensive ones. Yes, the built-in functions are limited and the power of tweaking determines all its strengths. The more you have creative ideas to tweak, the more you get.

I have been using Mio since last 3 yrs. I have no problem getting around in the U.S.A. I am not sure if it works in the Canada/Mexico/ Europe. It is cheapar compare to other GPS unit in the market.
