Although women are twice as likely to have depression, men are four times as likely to suffer its worst consequence: suicide. More than 90 percent of people who commit suicide have a history of depression, or another mental or substance-abuse disorder, often in combination. Starting in adolescence, men are far more likely than women to take their own lives. Older men, particularly white men over age 85, have the highest suicide rate. Although women attempt suicide three times as often as men, they are far less likely to complete it. Men's greater likelihood of using lethal means such as firearms accounts, in part, for the difference, but other factors also are involved. One such factor may be men's tendency to move from suicidal thoughts to suicidal actions faster than women. Months or years of thinking about suicide typically culminate in the development and enactment of a plan. Men take an average of 12 months to go from contemplating to attempting suicide, compared to 42 months for women. During this process, men are less likely than women to show warning signs such as suicidal threats. Because the window of opportunity is so short, doctors and mental health professionals may have little chance to recognize and treat a man's depression before he commits suicide. Depression is a malady like any other and it should be treated like any other, with a specialist. I'm of the opinion that the VAST majority of people who have depression don't actually have anything wrong with them. They have no friends, no life, don't do anything except sit around and think, never make any efort to socialize, get depressed, and all of a sudden it's a mental disorder. What always interested me about depression is what people think about suicide. Some people seem to think that suicide is a state you reach at a certain level of depression. That at depression level 10 or whatever you will commit suicide. In my opinion though, suicide isn't that cut and dry. You can be suicidal at almost any level really. Also wanted to add that change generally produces anxiety even when that anxiety is not conciously acknowledged. Learning how to deal productively with change might help alleviate some pressure on the system and make you more capable of dealing with the parts of you that feel depressed. Anxiety for a young person is kind of like a cold for an old person. While dealing with the cold properly prevents pneumonia, letting it go unchecked can have other, more serious outcomes. Plus, the quarter life just plain sucks.

"They have no friends, no life, don't do anything except sit around and think, never make any efort to socialize, get depressed, and all of a sudden it's a mental disorder." oh lord ,
how grateful am i that i happened to be a thinking man!
you did not give me any friends,
neither life nor the skills - the thankless grace of a social butterfly;
my skinny ass that you made is plain worthless except to sit on and think...
- Glory! you made me a thinking man! -
and just by chance, all of a sudden(!) i am a mental case...
you forged this creation on chaos, this lovely amagal of random chance:
the thousand cliffs you raised that sit on desolate rocks,
thousands more sit silently below the ocean green;
and below placid waters the parliament of clinically depressed fishes -
no friends, no life, no effort at socializing whatsoever -
idling away, darting in disordered (mentally so!) circles just to be seen;
the society of birds irrationally lined - no friends, the depression level dangerously high (almost 10) -
in arrowhead migrating and no chance of them sitting; Glory! that i was bestowed with a thinking Mind!

Oh No! I am not depressed!! Nice one mindgames. I think depression is more of a clinical propaganda than a clinical problem these days. When people are upset about their problems and act unconventional, they are labelled as psychopaths. Instead, the right term is weirdness. And that fades away as soon as they get over with their problems. There is also a tendency of assuming one as mentally deficient when he/she comes up with a different idea. Galilleo, Einstein and many others were called psychos at their times but they emerged out to be different, unique, creative, talented and better than the ordinary. If you think you are really depressed, consult your psychologist/psychiatrist. Otherwise, depression is a hoax to sell antidepressants. Do things to get rid of your problems instead of taking prozac on your own. You lack confidence and pharmaceuticals make more money. The problem they define as depression is not as alarming as it's being hyped. It's only helping people to think about it and feel it within themselves.
