म बाहुन परिवार मा जन्मेको हु. तर म बाहुन होइन. That is just a last name NOT caste. So, म केवल नेपाली हू.

my dad is a shrestha and my mom is bhandari. i was born and raised in "umrica".
my parents came here in their 20s and never told me about how newari culture and how it's different from other cultures within nepal. I was raised with nepali are people form nepal....and that was it. i know about stupid caste system and all....but i never knew that even the foods were different. i though every nepali people pretty much eat the same food.
i met a nepali girl and she asked what i was.....when i told her i was american but my background is nepali.....she was like but what are you....i was like...im american. any way she explained it to me.
And that is how i found out about newari....and she says im newari....which i really don't care what group im associated with....

but any who....here is a few things she said about newari (in general of course).....they are rich, land owner, very traditional and want to retain it, very very good food. but come to find out....i never had newari food....most nepali restaurant serve indian food...beside momo.

and oh btw....i don't know how to read nepali soo if you're gonna comment in nepali to convey a message to me....it's pointless

this chic that i'm thinking of smashing isn't even as sensitive at as you guys are.....stop being soo damm sensitive!!!

lol

@ Santa Lil Helper,
Everything else apart, the way you have written your comments, it certainly doesn't sound you are native English writer or atleast not the one who is claims to be born and raised here. LOL ..

Whoever or whatever one's background is until and unless one doesn't comprehend the culture to be of Nepal's, unity is difficult. We cannot leap forward if we think yomari wo: bara: are just Newari food but not Nepali food. I don't know but may be, it's same with the culture, Indrajatra of Newars, Teej just for bawun/chetri, or chaath for madesi.

There are external and internal political factors who will always want to divide and rule. This is certainly one of those things.

dude...im not even the one saying it.....i've literally met like 20 nepali people my whole life not counting the few folks my parents know....and it's more like hi-bye things.
The only reason i have this question is because this chic that i wanna smash brought this up. Like i said....my parents didn't raise me with the whole caste system mentality...its more like ....ur nepali if your from nepal done....there was none of that "this is our food and this is there food" stuff....it's all nepali food.

and come to find out.....there are some temple in nepal that if you're not newari....you can't even enter....which to me was waaayyy weird to hear.

i guess i'm learning a lot from her than you guys....cause you guys are literally being sensitive and taking offensive....where she is just telling me how it is....

oh and on my english writing/speaking skill.....you can blame it on the umrica school system...lol

Another thing I've noticed recently is that Newars in Kathmandu are like Republicans. They think of themselves(our parents generation atleast) as the "rightful owners" of Kathmandu.

And your dad and your uncles probably don't get along very well all in the name of ancestorial properties.

Hi Situ,

Thanks for real response. i dont' know why people are so heated.
It was a honest questions....and im actually googling more about it. And there are active blog about topic regarding newari and how there language is endangers, and how newari want there own state and stuff. Yea she was saying how they are hugh land owners. I don't if my dad had any issue with land and stuff back in nepal. i only been to nepal twice...no fam there...i just went to see where parents were from.
http://historum.com/asian-history/125579-why-were-newars-kathmandu-so-easily-assimilated-into-nepali-khas-culture.html

Not sure why people get all touchy touchy when it's a honest question.
Can't stand da heat....get outta kitchen!!!!

My trusted friends in different times have always been Newars. Integrity, honesty and hard working. That is the trait of most Newars I have interacted with. Also demanding and straightforward. I used to go to Bhaktapur every year for Raath Tanni Jatra (through the invitation of a Newari friend in Bhatapur) ra jhyap huni local raksi kyaera. 100s of years old event How many 100s, I don't know. An event that unites the whole city. Then I also tried Patan Rato Machindranath jatra, short distance from home. Event just happened a week ago. There is ChanguNarayan about 20 kilometers from Bhaktapur, where the hillside temple was built I think 1600 years ago (according to 1 article I had read long ago). It said the caught fire in late 17th century and Bhaktapure Raja rebuilt it. Also, in Dolakha, there are lots of homes build over 300 years ago with high quality architecture. Not sure if they are still standing. Newars are gifted people to my understanding as they are good at so many things. Mine and I assume millions of others' favorite singer Narayan Gopal is a Newar.

Growing up, i had lots of Newari friends. They(kids, parents, grand parents) tend to swear a lot in their native language. They always have some kind of festival(jatra) going on. Festival = Food, and Newari people have some of the best cuisine.

Dude, you are missing out on all the good stuff.

Newars aren't only from Kathmandu, they can be from Patan area or Bhaktapur or from outside valley. Depending on where they come from, their culture can be different. But, one thing for sure, no matter where they originally are from, they love to eat, drink and party! Come to Jackson Heights in Queens, NY and try out Samaya Baji. This is one of the typical newari cuisine. I'm sure there are a few Nepalese restaurants in VA too. During Tihar, there are several Nepalese gatherings in NY/MA for Mha Puja where you can get some flavor of Newariness. Just google and enjoy!
