Hey Guys,

I am taking
 the GRE test  very soon,
I
tried some practice test , it  seems  Math part looks pretty good but I am totally lost in verbal part. I am really worried about it...coz I must score
400+ on verbal for admission ... so please suggest some  tactics and techniques for better scoring on short preparation. Also any suggestion about GRE essays.

thanks,

Be a voracious reader of any material typed in English. Editorials of good newspapers/magazines are the best and I used the same way and I think it helped me a lot.

My experience-

Keep repeating the reading of Barons GRE for verbal. It is more than enough to get 500+ (I took it in 2005, got very easily 500+ without much effort, I used just Barons GRE Book for the preparation)

I did not score well in GRE writing part though (may be my computer typing skill was not good, may be I made alot of mistake in typing, at that time there was no option for writing on paper). In Toefl I got 5.5 out of 6 in writing part. I wrote the essay with pencil on  paper while taking Toefl.

Since you are short on time, try Princeton Review's 'Crackin the GMAT'. This book has some nifty tricks on how to tackle most common GMAT questions (especially the verbal section). Good Luck!!

I downloaded a few iphone apps to improve my vocab (Kaplan and SmartVocab I believe they were). I would just use the apps whenever I had time to kill. Never took a practice test and still ended up with 600+ so yea, vocab seems to be pretty important.

Barron's good source for vocab. Memorize as much as u can. U need a lot of reading and repitition and putting into sentence structure helps to retain that in ur longterm memory.practice reading comprehension, analogy ,sentence completion and antonym as well. Bigbook is the great source for verbal if ur target is 500+.

For Analytical writing go into the GRE issue and argument topic pools and practice them.pick 20-30 each.

Remember-Gre cant be mastered but it can be beaten.  To achieve better score u need to devote more time.I would recommend to devote more time unless ur genius.

When writing essay write outlines first, then put them into intro, 3-4 body paragraphs and conclusion. As we know we spend the least time on analytical we should spend a little more to make it worth.

Read Baron's Book, Big Book and as much materials you can find in the internet. Try making silly mnemonics of the difficult words and the mnemonics can be in Nepali as well.. this helps a lot... I used the same strategy and scored 600+ in verbal... wish you all the best.

rinasharma,
Do not forget to know the 1000 high frequency word list by heart. These are the words marked with a sold circle or square in Barron's 3500 list. Do not miss a single word coz they arent many. Most of the first 10 questions will contain words with this level of difficulty and/or frequency. If u dare to go for 3500, do yrself a favor and warm up yr word-talent  with very popular Latin n Greek word roots. I know it doesn't sound easy but with hard work and persistence it will look easier. Take as many PowerPrep tests as u can since that will be a real reflection of yr actual GRE score. My average score of 8 tests was only 10 less than my final score.
Try reading the passages faster and learn to scan sentences rather than reading word by word. RC is the area where most Nepalese mess up. On my first practice test, I had got only 2 right but I believe I only made 2 mistakes in the real test. It gets easier, trust me!
Try to give due importance to the first 7/8 questions. You will be weighed heavily on them...u must know it by now.
Good luck and let us know if it helped.
