Hey peepz,
Seriously, what type of people can afford to send their kids to Lincoln School in kathmandu. For high school, they charge a whopping US$15,900 a year. That is more than what I pay for college in NY.

That's around Rs. 11-12 lakh, which is seriously not that much. Average salary for good established doctors tends to be 4-5 lakhs. The average joes can't afford Lincoln School, but it is not for the average joes. I agree with @Land of Gorkhalis---this school was made for the children of the folks that work in the embassy. When it comes to someone else sending their kids to Lincoln, who cares?

पैसा छ भने जे गर, हामीलाई के को टाउको दुखने?

If you can afford an expensive "good" school, then send your kids there.

Doctor Bee,

You mean 11-12 lakh/yr, just for school, for 1 kid not that much for Nepali parent or a Foreigner?

Srijana,
You need to be more open-minded. Those words are very common in english as well as nepali. So just let it go. Nepali slang won't kill you. Trust me.

Typical Nepali mentality is evident on here. What's more, we get to see some more spicier aspects including hypocrisy.

Nepal has an abundance of people who've made a fortune by working in respectful areas. Doctors, Engineers, Restaurateurs, Hoteliers, Businessmen, Construction owners etc. are some mere examples. What the hell is wrong with some of you by voicing irrationale and pointless concern? It sounds like you halfwits have no clue that there are some seriously loaded people in Kathmandu. What the hell do you expect people who've run great businesses over the past 20-40 years do? Save all their money for their retirement? Carpet Manufacturers, Pashmina, Jute, Tea, Handicrafts etc have been some key areas that've yielded huge profits for Nepali businessmen.

Like I aforementioned, one of my relatives makes over 10 crore/ year in profit alone! And he's not a Sarkari Karmachari. He's a reputed businessman. Convert 10 crore to US dollars. That converts to around 1.3 million dollars! So you think its a big deal for someone making that much profit to spend 15 grand a year for his kid in a Nepali high school? Give me a fkn break.

Those of you who have problems with it are either jealous pricks or stuck ups. Broaden your views folks! Nepal's dire situation doesn't equate to the entire diaspora being poor. There are thousands of millionaires ( in US Dollars ) who've earned their money in a proper manner. There are people who own 4-5 houses in  various parts of the city and some make over 10 lakh/ month from rent alone! That's $12,000/ month! What about the owners of Bhatbhateni and other supermarkets?

I don't know if the person starting the thread is asking a serious question or not. It more sounds like he is saying "anyone sending their kids to Lincoln school is ridiculous." In any case, I hope I am not making a mistake by revealing this on sajha...but I studied in Lincoln School for 5 years. I didn't study there because my parents are millionaires. I studied there because my mother used to teach there for many years.

Honestly, speaking as a Nepali-ko chhora, even if I could afford it, I would not send my Nepali child to Lincoln school. If you want to know, ask me and I will tell you why.

Homey,
It would be nice to hear your opinion on why Nepali shouldn't attend the school? I personally would send my kids to a bit more Nepali school, but would love to hear your opinion of the school.

Pire,

When I went to go to study in Lincoln school I was in grade 1. I studied till grade 5.

The positive side of me studying in Lincoln is that I have close to perfect spoken English. Most Americans that I meet always compliment me on this. Speaking good English is not a guarantee of success, but nevertheless having good communication helps in job interviews and such.

There are a few other positive sides to going to Lincoln like exposure to international students, exposure to Western lifestyle, etc. They also have a great gym equipment and a wonderful library. Basically, I had a lot of fun studying in Lincoln. Everyday was like being in Disney World. There was a lot of resources. The teachers were a lot of fun. Lot of exciting art, music projects. Basically it was just like being in America because everything in the school, including the furniture and the pictures that hung on the walls, was imported from the States.

Pire, I don't know how much detail you want me to go in. I can write a lot on this subject.

The negative side was that the whole time I was in Lincoln school, many times I had an inferiority complex. Small things made a big difference. I know there was another Nepali girl in my class. She didn't always have the nicest clothes to wear. I know she felt a complex. In Lincoln school there is no uniform. Also, the Nepali kids, we always felt shy about the kind of lunch we took.
Now I am in America, this does not seem like a big deal. But when I was in Lincoln, as a kid. This was a big deal. The kids in Lincoln school used to bring sliced cheese wrapped in plastic. Fruit-rollups. Juice in cartons (this was in the 80's long before we had Frooti in Nepal).
Everything that my western friends did seemed so amazing. I had a deep inferiority complex that these Westerners were superior to us Nepalese.

On top of the above, the education in Lincoln school, at least when I was there, was not that hot. I mean there was a lot of room to be creative with music and art, and different teaching style. But I would say that for a Nepali to get ahead, they need to focus more on solid math and science subjects. Lincoln had more equipment for science experiements, but had less rigor in practice. Lincoln had no final exams. You had to be quite exceptionally hopeless to fail classes.

Nepali kids studying in Lincoln will have a great accent and be able to show off for their parents friends. But they will be behind when they need to compete for college, in my opinion.

Honestly speaking I feel that Nepali parents who send their kids to Lincoln are more concerned with showing off the money that they have instead of their children's future. That might sound a little bit too rough because every individual has a different reason why they send their kids to Lincoln. But, that is my opinion. Lincoln school is more a International Disney World than a place where you get a serious education.

Most of the Western kids that study in Lincoln school don't pay money from their pockets. Their parents international agencies pays for their schooling. Anyway, I could go into a lot more detail on this subject.

Homey,

Thanks for the note. That's in line with the expectation I had about Lincoln school. I definitely want to send my kids to a school where they are exposed to more rigorous mathematical curriculum.

Definitely Pire,

If solid math and science education is the cake, then a nice polished American accent is the icing and decoration on the cake. Too much fancy decoration and too little healthy cake is a recipe for a nasty stomach ache .

Definitely, if fine school are in within the land if can afford why not. But as Homeyji raised couple issues there , may not get into your head PIRE and others.

Economic theory supply and demand works it's own role. Specially in Nepal as other commenter raised that Nepali got so much disposable income as in past those Manage had when they were in export import business. It is definitely good sing of prosperity and nation is heading into different direction. Supply created it's own demand and Nepalese people are among them utilizing it. Many of us have a question, who are those Nepali and How they earn that money. If they are sending kids to that school with their legitimate income but not fraud, corruption and extortion are most welcomed.  I am in favor of those people who needed to have similar services without paying under the table fees to do day to day official work ( did you read Rahulbhai's Nepal visit ) and I do not support that kind of politician and engineer who intentionally disabled the CEMENT Factory and pocketed Millions.
ARE YOU WITH them then good for you.

@Sirjana--I meant that much money is मामूली for anyone with a formidable business venture in Nepal. Like some of the above posters said, some people make crores per year.

That is the thruth : Nepali are making more moenies than you folks woking in abroad. And much faster than and very esily.
Every body hates to raise fingers to their family even though that is the balck and white thruth, still claim their parents work hard to raise them and earned that money fortnight, But HOW? Not ready to accpet the worng doing because we are enjoying it and made it possible to go to good privet school and proud to look other down ( go and learn english or write in Devnagari or roman) just because we think we have better english than others, where the culture and decency is overlooked.

Have you heard " लुटको धन फुपुको स्राद्ध "? If got easy money and no accountability and no tax , if does not put thier children school like LIncoln then neighbour will start calling name. Who dare to hear the name as you have Millions on your bank.

That is the smartest thing they are doing  atleast sending thier kids on good privet school , but you who went to privet school  and if look back to your family back ground and figured out how you were able to go to that privet school and now trying to differentiate rest who went to public school and always try to look down others, shame on you.

All Employee  and politicians are enter twined with criminals or created a situation or created a web , can not pass without paying.
Last time I mentioned that we citizens are responsible about making the employee corrupt and may be over 60-70 percent always thinking of making easy money , my neighbour paid to the Malpot office employee and make the public road to his personal road.
And the SNNA  must be one of the decendent of corrupt family " otter "आमचाक्लि  & रन्डिकोबान" , why he was so angry ?  Did I pin point to him personally ?  That is the attitude resembles with the corrupt family.

Easy money with corruption or Crime making Nepali rich,  Why we are rescuing women from Indian red light zone, It is we who belive in fast and easy money not in hard work with honesty. We are motivated by those who were on the street  are now in senate or have Pajero and banglow.
Last time some one posted why we are not going back to Nepal, thaks to them who do not want to be part of that crime culture.
